Leeds man jailed for five years after dice game ended in sex offences

Gareth Underwood.

Gareth Underwood.

A man has been jailed for five years for sexual offences against two schoolgirls after he played a dice game with them in his home.

Leeds Crown Court heard the girls, aged 12 and 13, knew Gareth Underwood and called at his address in Burlington Road, Beeston, Leeds in August last year hoping to get some money.

He gave them brandy and they went upstairs to his bedroom, where they began playing the game which involved doing what the dice said. That led to him touching them over their clothing, and he got them to perform sexual acts on him.

Tom Storey, prosecuting, said Underwood gave them some money when they left, which the pair spent on drink. That led to one of them becoming so intoxicated she ended up in hospital and the offences came to light.

Underwood, 56, admitted one offence of rape and one of sexual activity with a child.

Kama Melly, representing Underwood, said he had thought the girls were much older and was disgusted and ashamed when he discovered their true age.

Jailing him, Judge Tom Bayliss QC said it was a “sorry tale”.
