Leeds lapdancing club in 24-hour opening bid
A lapdancing club in Leeds could be the first in the city to open for 24 hours a day.
The Wildcats club on The Headrow has applied to Leeds City Council to alter the terms of its licence.
The club's licence currently allows music, dance, entertainment and the sale of alcohol from 10am to 6am but it actually opens officially from 8pm to 6am.
It is allowed to serve hot food and hot beverages from 11pm to 5am.
But now the club has applied to extend its licence to allow it to open 24 hours.
If successful, it would be the first lapdancing club in the city that could be open all day.
The Wildcats chain also has clubs in Harrogate and Wakefield, but describes Leeds as its "flagship" club.
Opened in 2007, the two-floor venue includes a restaurant, two bars, private dance booths and "up to 60 girls working".
The club is no stranger to controversy after anti-sleaze campaigners wanted the sexy logo removed from Wildcats earlier this year.
The silhouette of a voluptuous woman on all fours dressed in a cat costume is the branding for the lapdancing club chain.
But objectors said the image was sexually provocative, offensive to families and unsuitable for the location opposite the town hall and art gallery.
At the time Rosie Robinson Boardman, spokeswoman for the Leeds Object campaign, said: "It is quite clearly sexually overt and it's obvious this is a lapdancing club.
"This is a lovely, high profile area of Leeds, round the corner from the museum.
"You come to Leeds for a wonderful cultural experience at the town hall, art gallery or library, and you are slapped with the sex industry in front of you."
A council investigation concluded the catwoman logo was NOT offensive enough to be banned.
When plans to open the club were revealed in 2006, they were met with disapproval with one councillor branding it "ludicrous" – particularly as it is so near to the town hall and the war memorial.
Details of how to object to this latest development of plans to open 24 hours can be found on the council's website at www.leeds.gov.uk in the 'licences and street trading' section.
Residents can lodge their objections to the application until November 18.
