Deep inside Kirkgate Market in Leeds is a stall with a difference.

Behind big picture windows, some of the best produce the market has to offer is being turned into mouthwatering dishes.

This is Jamie’s Ministry of Food, which has been carrying out its mission for almost three years.

Created by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, hundreds each month learn to make an array of meals from scratch – including healthier, cheaper alternatives to typical takeaways like pizza and curry.

Steph Patterson and Natasha Day are putting the final touches to a delicious pea and mint soup.

Steph, from Whinmoor, Leeds, said though she enjoyed cooking already, the eight-week course was teaching her new things.

“It’s really interesting, we’re learning about the healthier options and different ways of cooking.”

Natasha, from Swarcliffe, added: “It’s great. I do cook but I’ve learned different techniques to cook things that I would never have thought of.”

Trainer Jayne Kennedy, one of four, said: “This session is really to show the students they can make a big batch of something that’s really cheap. Instead of spending a pound on a carton of soup, you can spend about a pound and make eight or ten portions.”

They also discussed salt content, comparing the amount in ready made soups with the homemade version.

Simon Chappelow, project manager of the scheme which is jointly funded by NHS Leeds and Leeds City Council and run by charity Zest - Health for Life, said they were very busy with groups from many organisations taking part in courses.

“People really want to know how to make dishes from scratch,” he said. “They know there’s no E numbers or hidden nasties in the food as we don’t put them in.”

Ring 0113 2425685 or email: mof@zesthealthforlife.org for information on courses.
