Young Adam Tattersall is getting a kick out of following in his father’s footsteps.
The nine-year-old karate kid won three medals in the national championships – where dad Michael was also awarded three medals.
Adam’s mum Wendy and sister Amy, six, also practise the martial art.
Michael said: “I have trained since 1983 at the age of 10 and I wanted to pass on the knowledge I had to others.
“My wife Wendy trains and is currently a purple belt, my son Adam is a brown belt and has trained with me since he was five and my daughter Amy is an orange belt and has been training for about a year so this is truly a family affair.”
Adam won bronze in kata, silver in sport point kumite and gold in the traditional kumite category, making him the national champion.
Michael added: “Martial arts takes a lot of dedication, practice, patience and effort.
“Adam was outstanding.
“He breezed through several rounds to reach the final and with great skill and composure won gold to become national champion. Like father like son!”
Michael, 39, runs Leeds Premier Karate Club and opened his first club at the age of 17.
He also won gold in the kata, sport point kumite and traditional kumite categories and was one of the youngest people to be awarded the black belt sixth dan in November last year.
He now runs clubs from Westfield Junior School in Yeadon and at Meadowfield Primary School on Halton Moor Avenue.
Other students from the club including Kai Willis, 10, William Renton, 10, Luke Jackson, 14, Nathan Blessitt, 11, Georgia Blessitt, 15, and Bev Bartram also won medals at the competition.
