A councillor has hit out at plans to build an incinerator on a former wholesale market site in Leeds.

The council recently revealed it is to choose Veolia Environmental Services Aurora to build the electricity-generating incinerator, which will burn the city’s household waste that cannot be recycled.

Veolia, which intends to build the facility on the site of the former wholesale market off Pontefract Lane, Cross Green, emerged as the council’s preferred bidder for the scheme.

It came out ahead of Aire Valley Environmental, which proposed to build the incinerator near the former Knostrop waste water treatment works in Cross Green.

Coun Bill Hyde, (Con Temple Newsam), whose ward includes the former market, said: “The nearest housing is a quarter of a mile and there is also a public park a similar distance away.

“Surely a more appropriate location could have been chosen for this highly controversial facility? The alternative proposal was more sensible in terms of its location, which at the Knostrop water treatment site is further away from housing.

“While the project will bring significant benefits, I just feel that the location is wrong in terms of its impact on local people.” Coun Mark Dobson, the council’s executive member for environmental services, said the incinerator would be safe, well screened and smaller than one proposed some years ago, taking up only half of the former market site.

We have asked the council the question below several times now but they have so far either used diversion tactics ,spin or just ignored us .................................................................................................................................Why has a company with previous convictions in the UK and worldwide courts for release of toxic fumes into atmosphere ,illegal storage of chemicals , onsite fires ans several breaches of health and safety inc death of employees been not only allowed to participate in the contract negotiations for the incinerator but actually been promoted as the preferred bidder by the Leeds city council .?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The members of the east leeds facebook community page await their reply ?.

Doesn't matter if it was at the water treatment site or the old market site. All four proposed sites were within half a mile of each other. The excuse being the A1 being close. Odd they didn't choose Wetherby then huh? How healthy can the output be from a site that burns materials which are non recycleable? With a little luck the only thing burnt will be the construction itself by some of the locals...then the council may realise Wetherby would be a better site.

I think we all know how council meetings go. If its anything that residents would be opposed to it gets dumped into East or South Leeds. When Leeds needs to look for an alternative caravan site for travellers in the future you can bet your life that North Leeds wont have any viable sites but they'll find plenty in East and South Leeds.

I wonder if Mark Dobson would have been in favour of the incinerator if Garforth had been recommended? Anyway, why Cross Green instead of Knostrop? It would be useful if these articles contained more information and not just a few paragraphs.
