FAMILIES in Leeds are being urged to help boost the life expectancy of children from Eastern Europe.
Ten youngsters from Belarus came to the city as part of a four-week visit to England.
They have been brought to the UK by the Chernobyl Children’s Project, which supports families still affected by the 1986 nuclear power disaster.
The children have lived their lives eating and drinking food contaminated with radiation and are at risk of developing cancer.
A break in the UK gives them a chance to rebuild their health.
While in England they live with host families who feed and clothe them and treat them as their own, at their own expense.
Just four weeks eating and drinking healthily could boost their immunity to cancer by up to three years.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun RevAlan Taylor, is encouraging families to volunteer.
He said: “The reality is that many of these children grow up with a chance of getting cancer.
“By enabling the children to come over to the UK they get time away to rest and rebuild their health.
“I would encourage anyone in Leeds who has the time to get involved.”
Nicola Morse, from the Chernobyl Children’s Project Leeds, said: “Hosting the children is a fantastic, rewarding experience.
“Our children participate in all the activities with the Belarussian children and learn about a new culture and a different way of life.”
