Staff at a hair salon proved they were a cut above the rest after raising more than £1,000 for charity.

Paul Shakeshaft, owner of Yazz No 1 Hair Salon in Guiseley, asked customers onn November 6 to make a donation instead of paying for their hair cuts.

All proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust and Leeds General Infirmary’s neurology ward 21 where former Guiseley School student Murray Watson, pictured right, is being treated for a rare form of spinal cancer.

The 18-year-old fell ill suddenly over the summer, when he lost all use of his legs. The promising footballer, who in recent months had played for Otley Town FC, is now also struggling to use his arms and wrists.

The loss of mobility has been caused by a tumour on his spine. He is undergoing intense sessions of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Murray’s family have been overwhelmed by the public’s support. Dad Kenny, 47, said: “It’s very humbling that people have taken this to heart.”

The charity hair event at Yazz was inspired by Greig Robertson, 17, head boy of Guiseley School.
