Two inspired grandmothers from Leeds have found a novel way of keeping the little ones entertained.

Friends Chris Barraclough and Joy Garland, both aged 60, have seen huge success after launching a range of children’s activity books.

The pair have ben pals since primary school and became business partners after working at different nurseries in Leeds.

Their personalised books, designed by friend Sarah Chantrill, have now been snapped up by companies such as Jet2, Welcome to Yorkshire, Bibi’s restaurant in Leeds and hotels across the city.

The books include pictures, games, checklists, postcards and puzzles that can be personalised to each brand.

Joy, of Moortown, used to be a manager at North Leeds Community Nursery.

She said: “We decided we wanted to go into business together but weren’t quite sure what to do.

“Both of our careers have been in childcare so it was best to stick to what we know.”

The friends started a wedding crèche at Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate to entertain youngsters during ceremonies and receptions before they branched out in to books.

Joy added: “It is just fantastic to be in business with my friend.

“We know from our own experience how difficult it can be to keep kids entertained.

“The activity books seem to have taken off really quickly and are doing really well.”

Before starting the Little Something Extra business, Chris used to be a manager at Headingley Pre-School.

She also has a degree in childhood studies from Leeds Metropolitan University and was a family support worker in east Leeds.

She said: “It takes time to do but it has just been so exciting.

“Every new book is like a new journey and an adventure.”

The activity books are also available at Waterstones in Leeds city centre.
