Leeds grandma's hospice calendar success

A Leeds artist has chosen her favourite paintings to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity that cared for her great-granddaughter who died of cancer aged just 14.

Pauline Anderson, from Calverley, Leeds, has painted scenes from the village for the past 20 years and turned them into a calendar to raise money for Martin House Hospice, near Wetherby.

Mrs Anderson, 83, raised more than 1,400 for the charity by selling hundreds of calendars that feature some of Calverley's well-known landmarks.

Her great-granddaughter Lauren Kisby, who would have turned 15 this month, died in April last year from Ewing's sarcoma, a bone tumour in her pelvis.

Lauren, a pupil at Crawshaw School, spent time at Martin House Hospice before she died at home surrounded by her family.

Mrs Anderson, who started to paint after retiring at 67, said: "Lauren

used to make cards and paint. She was very creative and I have got a lot of cards that she made me for my birthdays.

"She started to visit Martin House before she died and her family wanted her home so that she could be with them.

"They took her back there the day she died and I was really upset when I saw her. She looked peaceful and at rest."

Mrs Anderson also raised a further 300 for Macmillan Nurses in memory of her husband John, who died aged 71 from pneumonia.

He was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and was cared for by the charity.

The calendars have all sold out and some have even been sent as far afield as Australia.

Mrs Anderson has also turned all the calendar paintings into greetings cards for charity and they cost 1 each or six for 5.

She added: "I just hope that people carry on buying my cards. If anyone can give to Martin House it is a worthy cause and they need the money out there."

Prof Cliff Bailey, a trustee of Martin House and one of its founders, added: "The amount of effort each painting has is tremendous."
