Leeds Flower Show is big success

Mouthwatering summer fruits and lashings of homemade honey made the 123rd Leeds Flower Show one of the sweetest yet.

Plant lovers and gardeners flocked to Lawnswood School for the two day showcase of beautiful blooms, awesome vegetables and impressive handicrafts.

Keen horticulturalists ensured there were almost 2,000 entries in the 300 or so competition categories.

Highlights included a beautiful selection of arrangements in the Yorkshire Day category, with an explosion of white roses filling the room.

Contributing groups included the Leeds Fuchsia Society, which held its own show within a show, and the ever-popular Harrogate Orchid Society.

Wannabe gardeners had the chance to sign up for their own allotment, and there were plenty of family-friendly activities, including a handwriting competition for younger visitors which attracted 200 entries.

Welcome refreshments were provided by the ladies from the local Women's Institute.

Elizabeth Bidgood, chairwoman of Leeds Horticultural Society, which organises the annual show, said: "It has gone extremely well and we are really pleased.

"We had four rain showers in the two days but the crowds kept coming."
