A Leeds teacher and first aider is calling on more people across the city to learn to become lifesavers.

Ryan Hudson, Wetherby unit manager and advanced first aider, has been involved with first aid charity St John Ambulance for over two-and-a-half-years.

And the 24-year-old is calling on more people to learn the basic skills that could be the difference between life and death in an emergency.

The primary school teacher has already used the first aid skills he learned with St John Ambulance when a woman cut her leg getting into a car at a festival at Harewood House.

Although the cut looked minor, the woman was taking blood-thinning drugs that caused it to bleed heavily.

With his first aid knowledge, Ryan averted a more serious situation by stemming the flow while arranging for an ambulance to take the woman, in her sixties, to hospital.

He said: “First aid is one of those skills that will stay with you for a lifetime because anything could happen at any time of the day.

“The sooner someone gets help then the chances of survival for them will be greatly increased.”

The Yorkshire Evening Post has teamed up with St John Ambulance to teach first aid skills to 500 people across the city.

Hundreds of readers have already taken part in one of our specially discounted first aid courses.

And now we are calling on even more readers to show their support for our First Aid For All campaign to help reach our next milestone target of 400 first aiders.

Shocking figures reveal nearly one-third of parents in Leeds had a child involved in an accident needing first aid during the holidays.

But one-third of those lacked the essential first aid skills to be able to help their children in an emergency.
