Firefighters faced a struggle to find a man trapped in his car in Leeds – because he had no idea where he was.
Paul Lonergan was unable to get out of his badly damaged Citroen after it came off the M1 in heavy rain and strong wind between junctions 45 and 46 in the Newsam Green area.
The 43-year-old, from Stoke on Trent, called 999 but could see very little out of the window and no idea of his location following the incident on Wednesday night.
But, using a combination of his sat-nav and maps on his phone, he was able to give call handlers a rough idea.
Fire engines were despatched to the general area and he was told to look out for their blue lights.
The crews, from Stanks and Garforth, eventually tracked him down about 25 minutes later.
Mr Lonergan said: “I was so relieved to see the flashing blue lights appear in the distance. My family is my world and I definitely feel blessed this Christmas to have walked away from that.”
