The anguished family of a Leeds schoolgirl who was left for dead after a hit-and-run near her home are continuing their hospital bedside vigil.
Sabah Saleem, 10, was mowed down with her two-year-old brother Rayhan after they visited a nearby shop to get vegetables for their family’s Eid celebrations.
They both suffered serious head injuries and were left fighting for their lives.
Rayhan, two, was discharged from hospital last week but Sabah, who is believed to have bore the brunt of the impact to shield her brother, still remains unconscious.
Her family are taking it in turns to remain by her bedside at Leeds General Infirmary following the incident on Brudenell Road, in Hyde Park, on August 18.
Her uncle Aroon Rafique told the YEP: “Sabah is improving slowly but she is still unconscious.
“We have asked when she will recover but the doctors have said that they don’t know.
“They are letting her body heal itself. The surgeon said that next week she may show some signs of improvement.”
He added: “It’s really, really hard. We’re all taking it in turns now to go to the hospital.”
Father Saleem Rafique praised Rayhan’s recovery as a “miracle”.
Describing the aftermath of the incident he told the YEP: “I went running to my son and saw my daughter behind me gasping for air. There was blood everywhere.
“It was like the worst nightmare you could ever imagine.
“How could someone in their right mind just leave two innocent little children on the road and not come back?”
Police arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident; a 39-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving; and a 26-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender.
All three, from Leeds, are currently on bail and have not been charged.
