A driver panicked and led police on a high-speed chase after he was spotted driving his newly-bought car without insurance.

A police officer waiting at lights at the Armley Gyratory saw a Peugeot 206 go through late, brake and then continue.

He followed believing the driver had seen him but his blue light was ignored and the car accelerated on the A58 Inner Ring Road cutting up other vehicles, Philip Morris prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court.

It reached speeds in excess of 80mph before driving towards Sheepscar where traffic blocked his way, the car spun, hit the kerb and the driver Leon Frederick ran off.

Marlon Grossman in mitigation said he had foolishly decided to get insurance when he got home.

Frederick, 25 of Newton Grove, Leeds was jailed for 14 months and disqualified for three years after admitting dangerous driving and without insurance.
