Leeds cyclist riding in US tyremarks of penny farthing pioneer

A Leeds man following the tyremarks of the first person to cycle around the world has joined in with our On Yer Bike! picture appeal.

Stuart Lowe, who lives in West Park, is recreating the journey first made by Thomas Stevens 130 years ago on a penny farthing – but on a regular bicycle.

Like Stevens he set off on April 22 and plans to follow his route and timings as closely as possible, travelling around 3,000 miles on a coast to coast ride across the USA over 100 days.

Stuart, who is paying for the trip from his savings while raising money for the Doctors Without Borders aid charity, said: “Since reading the story of Thomas Stevens I’ve wanted to recreate his journey and 2014 – the 130th anniversary – seemed an appropriate time.”

He has joined dozens of cyclists – including members of Drighlington Bicycle Club and individual riders across the county – in sending the Yorkshire Evening Post a snap of him with his bike.

Through our On Yer Bike! campaign we are encouraging readers to send in pictures of them getting out and about on two wheels in a bid to inspire others to start cycling.

We will publish readers’ On Yer Bike! cycling pictures in-paper and online until the Tour de France rolls into action from Leeds’ Headrow for the start of the Leeds to Harrogate stage one on July 5.

Send your pictures, with a note telling us your name, age, where you are from and where your On Yer Bike! snap was taken, to jonathan.brown@ypn.co.uk
