Leeds credit card fraud case man's £15,108 seized
A court has ordered £15,108 to be forfeited after a Leeds man failed to face credit card fraud charges.
The cash was seized when police raided the home of the man in Shafton View, Holbeck, Leeds, in May 2007.
Economic crime unit (ECU) detectives were investigating the alleged skimming of credit and debit cards – stealing their information using an electronic scanner – in a Leeds toy store.
The forfeiture under the Proceeds of Crime Act (Poca) was approved after magistrates in Wakefield agreed that "on the balance of probability, the money was intended to be used for unlawful conduct".
Det Con Peter Kilbride of the ECU said: "Poca allows for suspected ill- gotten gains to be forfeited even if the person they came from has not been convicted of an offence.
"In this case the man charged with the offences has failed to appear therefore the magistrates have deemed the cash was intended for unlawful conduct.
"Using this powerful legislation we have not had to wait for a criminal conviction and it now enables us to use the cash to fund community projects or further policing operations."
