THE victim of a fatal car crash, which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning, has been named as Mohammed Ahsaan Ali.
Police have confirmed the identity after the 21-year-old, from Roundhay, died when the Toyota Yaris he was driving left Roundhay Road, in Harehills, and collided with a traffic light pillar.
The incident, which overturned the car, trapping Mr Ali, occurred close to the junction with Gledhow Valley Road at around 12.15am.
Coun Kamila Maqsood, who covers the neighbouring Gipton and Harehills ward, knows the victim’s grandparents.
She said: “It’s a very tragic incident and everyone is obviously still trying to come to terms with what happened.”
Mr Ali’s car had been driving along Roundhay Road at the same time as a Nissan Micra.
A 23-year-old man, who was driving the Nissan Micra, has been released on police bail after being arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Police and fire crews from Moortown and Gipton were called and firefighters had to cut Mr Ali out of his car after the incident.
He was taken to the Leeds General Infirmary but was later pronounced dead.
Floral tributes continue to gather at the scene.
