Leeds: Council to spend £32,000 on 20mph speed restriction trial
Transport chiefs in Leeds are to spend £32,000 trialling 20mph zones near schools in a bid to reduce road casualties.
About 20 schools will take part in the trial and will be chosen on the basis of local accident statistics and an assessment of site suitability. Currently, half of all road injuries to both adults and children in Leeds happen near to 50 of the 242 schools not within a 20mph zone.
If the trial is successful, detailed proposals will be drawn up to extend the zones across the city.
Coun Andrew Carter (Con, Farsley and Calverley) said: "These 20 mph zones, if they prove successful, will benefit everyone who lives close to schools, promoting safer streets and reducing traffic casualties. It's important we trial schemes such as this to make sure they work, but if this scheme is adopted it will be a popular step with children, parents, teachers and residents."
