The alarm was raised at about 4.30am when police received reports of trouble outsight the night club which is between The Grand Theatre and the lower part of Merrion Street.

First reports indicated that four men had been involved in the fight which is believed to have spilled over the pavement and onto the road.

Officers also closed off part of New Briggate which was expected to cause problems for traffic, particularly buses which would normally use it as a thoroughfare to north Leeds.

The badly injured local man was today undergoing surgery to his neck wounds at the Leeds Infirmary where he was transferred to from St James's Hospital.

Det Insp Phil Wright of City and Holbeck CID, leading the investigating, said that it was believed that a group of four men had become involved in a fight with two other men outside the night club after an incident inside GatecrasherSeven night club.

The 23-year-old wounded man had not initially realised how badly hurt he was and he had run to his parked car, he said.

But it was only then that the man realised he was pouring blood from his neck wound and his friends immediately drove him in a car to St James's Hospital.

One of the possibilities being probed by detectives was that he had been slashed across the neck with a glass bottle. All six men involved in the fight are believed to be or Asian origin. At least two men thought to have been involved in the fight were today still being sought by police and Det Insp Wright appealed for them and any other witnesses to come forward.

The other man who was treated for more minor wounds is believed to be of a similar age and also local to Leeds.

Police appealed for any witnesses or any person with information about what happened to ring City and Holbeck CID on Leeds 2414659.
