The race is on to find the next Children’s Mayor of Leeds and ten youngsters have thrown their hats into the ring.

All the candidates have unveiled their manifestos and voting is under way in the annual contest.

For this year’s competition, children aged 10 or 11 from primary schools across the city were asked to submit manifestos based on one of the council’s themes for a more child friendly Leeds, which include travel, healthy lifestyles, safe play areas, jobs and learning.

The ten finalists’ manifestos have now been uploaded to the Breeze website and the Leeds Learning Network, allowing people to vote for their three favourite entries. About 3,000 votes were cast in last year’s contest.

The finalists will be invited for tea with the Lord Mayor, Coun Ann Castle, on November 8 when the winner will be announced and will accompany Coun Castle to the turning on of the Leeds Christmas Lights.

Last year’s winner, Joe Smith, whose manifesto was entitled Keeping Kidz Active, said: “It was a really exciting year with plenty of different opportunities. I met loads of really great people and attended lots of events, including the Leeds Lights Switch On.”
