young patients will benefit from a brighter X-ray and ultrasound ward with more toys thanks to generous NHS workers.

Staff from the office of NHS Shared Business Services in Tingley, Leeds, raised more than £2,200 to revamp the facilities at Leeds Children’s Hospital.

The 60-strong team took part in last year’s Clarion Leeds 10K Corporate Challenge, one of the events set up by Run For All, which was launched by late fundraiser Jane Tomlinson.

Jane, from Rothwell, Leeds, was a paediatric radiographer and used to work on the ward, so the money was allocated by the charity in her name to give the waiting room a facelift.

A plaque marks the refurbishment, which includes new seating and storage as well as more toys, DVDs and books.

Colette Thompson, senior paediatric radiographer at Leeds General Infirmary, thanked the fundraisers and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

“The waiting area has made such a big difference to all our patients. The area has made the daunting experience of having lengthy examinations and having to wait, a lot more pleasant – it has kept them nicely occupied and distracted from any worries they have regarding their x-rays or ultrasounds.

“It is so nice to have areas and toys we can all be proud of.”

Jane Mooney, Jane Tomlinson Appeal fundraising assistant, said: “The improvements will make such a difference to the children and their families who often have to make several visits to the ward when they are receiving treatment.”

Richard Underwood, project manager for NHS Shared Business Services, added: “It’s fantastic to come and see the result of our fundraising efforts and to know that we’ve made a difference. Since the event, we’ve now formed a running club and are in training for this year’s event.”

This year’s Asda Foundation Jane Tomlinson Run For All Leeds 10K takes place on July 20.
