Leeds children muck in to help mark Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year

Green-fingered school pupils rolled up their sleeves and mucked in to help leave a Royal legacy.

Youngsters from schools across Horsforth were invited to plant nine cherry trees in Horsforth’s Hall Park to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Children from St Margaret’s Primary, Horsforth Academy and Westbrook Lane Primary picked up shovels and helped to plant the trees.

Local councillors Chris Townsley and Brian Cleasby, who funded the project from their community funds, also mucked in to help celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 year reign on the throne.

Councillor Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) said: “ It has come from our own funds.

“The cherry trees will have some nice colour that everyone can enjoy.

“The trees are representative of the nine schools in our ward.

“The children loved it and it was great, but it was freezing cold.”

Westbrook Lane Primary headteacher Joan Tattersall added: “We are delighted that our children had the opportunity to take part in planting cherry trees in the park in this Jubilee year.

“It’s been a pleasure to be part of this community
project which will provide a legacy for children for years to come.”

Hundreds of residents across Horsforth gathered in the park earlier this year to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with an afternoon of family activities.

Horsforth was selected to light an official beacon as part of the nation’s celebrations.
