A Leeds charity is ready to start handing out funds generated by its Yorkshire Evening Post-backed Winter Warmth Campaign.

The Leeds Community Foundation (LCF) appeal has to date raised more than £30,000 – money which it is now looking to distribute to groups working with the elderly and other vulnerable people during the coldest months of the year.

And today it called on possible beneficiaries to get their applications for support in as soon as possible, as it wants to make funds available by the end of January.

The LCF also issued a fresh rallying cry for people in Leeds to help push the current appeal total of £32,000 up to its original target figure of £50,000.

Chief executive Sally-Anne Greenfield said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of the winter warmth grants scheme and would encourage local groups to apply so they don’t miss out.

“It is a great opportunity for a range of community projects supporting older and vulnerable people to gain extra funding when they need it most.

“We would like to thank members of the public who have already generously donated but we still need more help if we are going to reach our target of £50,000.

“In the final countdown to Christmas we are urging people to donate if they can.

“With warnings of cold weather over the weekend, it really brings home to us all just how important this appeal is.”

Grants of up to £2,500 are on offer to voluntary or community groups, charities and social enterprises.

Cash will be awarded to applicants with ideas designed to address social isolation and aid vulnerable people living in cold housing.

Groups that received grants when the LCF ran the same programme last year included Swarcliffe Good Neighbours Scheme and Morley Elderly Action. For more details on how to submit a bid for support, visit the www.leedscf.org.uk website or ring 0113 242 2426. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday, January 10.

Donations to the Winter Warmth Campaign can be made via the www.leedscf.org.uk/donate-online web page.

Cheques made payable to Leeds Community Foundation can be posted to 51a St Paul’s Street, Leeds, LS1 2TE.
