Leeds celebrates Jewish heritage

The Leeds Jewish community is hosting LJ150, a major project spanning the next two years that will chronicle the last 150 years of Jewish heritage in the city.

Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks will launch the programme in October by marking the beginning of the first Jewish History Month in Leeds.

The project, organised by Makor, the Jewish cultural office for Leeds and Yorkshire, will feature memorabilia on the first purpose-built synagogue in Leeds which was opened on Belgrave Street in 1860.

"We want to create a real celebration of our unique heritage and invite members of the wider community to volunteer their reminiscences and ideas," said Helen Frais, Makor's project manager.

LJ150 will showcase a heritage day at Leeds City Museum on November 28 which will feature stalls exploring Jewish heritage over the years, culminating in the acting out of a Jewish wedding.

Mrs Frais is appealing for vintage outfits for the mock ceremony with particular emphasis on clothing from Jewish-based firms Burtons and Marks and Spencer.

The Makor team is appealing for assistance from the community to help make the day an historic part of the celebrations.

A sculpture day with Frances Segelman is also in the pipeline.

The sculptor, who has created pieces of art for the royal family and whose statue of Leeds United football icon Billy Bremner stands outside Elland Road, is offering the opportunity for a member of the community to have their head sculpted.

"We are inviting sealed bids in excess of 1,000 from those interested in nominating themselves or a loved one," said Mrs Frais.

The sculpting event is taking place on February 27, 2011 and the closing date for bids is the end of this month.

The heritage exhibition will link-up with young people from youth club The Zone who will create recorded videos that reflect Leeds Jewish life then and now.

Sewing machines and textiles including tailors' dummies, stools and pressers are also required for the City Museum exhibition.
