Hundreds of thousands of shoppers took to the streets of Leeds to bag themselves last minute Christmas bargains.

More than 1.5m people were believed to have flocked to the city centre this weekend as the city bucks a national downturn trend.

And bosses at Trinity Leeds are preparing for nearly three-quarters of a million shoppers to pass through its doors between Christmas and New Year.

The shopping centre saw over 100,000 shoppers pick up last minute Christmas presents yesterday and queues had to be controlled outside the Pandora jewellery store in the mall.

Trinity Leeds marketing manager Paul Smith said: “We were expecting over 100,000 shoppers by the time the shops closed at 10pm yesterday and we’re sure to welcome thousands more on Christmas Eve.

“There’s definitely a sense of urgency as customers queue for those special last minute items and jewellery in particular is doing well with people flowing out of the doors at Pandora.

“Many of out stores are in sale now and we wouldn’t be surprised if we welcomed over 750,000 through our doors between Christmas and New Year.”

Shoppers also braved the queues and kept the cash tills ringing at the White Rose Shopping Centre.

Thousands of people flocked to the centre from early today (December 23) following a busy weekend.

Nikki Appleton, the centre’s marketing manager, said: “With customers combining their grocery and Christmas gift shopping, we had a continuous flow of people arriving from 6am when Sainsbury’s opened.

“All other stores were open from 9am until 10pm and for those focusing on buying presents.

“The popular items included the must-have woolly Christmas jumper, branded footwear, ladies accessories, jewellery, perfume, health and beauty items, mobile phones and accessories, e-readers, toys and games”

Nikki added: “We are anticipating another busy day (December 24) when we are open from 8am and we will also be open on Boxing Day from 8am until 8pm.”
