Leeds businessman is charity top dog

THE FIRST 'Chief Barker' of the Variety Club Children's Charity to live outside London has been named.

And it is a Leeds businessman who is the charity's new top dog.

Paul Lawrence was announced as 'Chief Barker' – chairman of the board – at the charity's annual Christmas lunch last week.

The charity is one of the UK's oldest, helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged children.

Mr Lawrence said: "The Variety Club is committed to a path of modernisation. During my term of office I want to make sure we keep driving forward and recruit as many young people as possible to help us with our fundraising."

His 2010 tenure will include travelling around the UK to see the work of the charity first hand.

Over the past 60 years Variety Club has raised more than 200m, making a difference to the lives of millions of children.

Mr Lawrence said: "We recognise that 2010 will be a challenging year but our new relationships have the potential to raise millions for the Variety Club."

The charity are to work with the AHG/MWB Groups, including Liberty of London, Malmaison and Hotel Du Vin, the De Vere and Village Hotel chains.

They are also set to benefit from the support of the Co-operative Group.

Mr Lawrence said: "We have lots of exciting things planned for next year including the presentation of the 5000th Sunshine Coach."

Sunshine Coaches are buses used to transport disabled children, as well as youth clubs and similar organisations.

Mr Lawrence has been involved with Variety Club for 15 years and has been chairman of the Yorkshire committee twice.

He is a governor at Leeds Grammar School and Leeds College of Music and a supporter of the arts and other good causes through his family's charitable trust.

The Leeds-born businessman now lives in Harrogate with his wife Catherine and four children.

He is a consultant at Leeds-based insurance brokers and financial advisors, Lawrence Scoffield & Co, which he co-founded 28 years ago. He is also a non-executive director of Domus Health and has links with corporate recovery firm, Paradigm Global.
