The biggest bus company in Leeds has announced a round of fare rises.

Prices for a number of First's day and week passes will go up from August 1, the firm said today.

The news comes just days after it emerged First had lost control of several Leeds services to a rival operator.

Under the revised fare structure, the cost of a FirstDay peak-time pass for West Yorkshire will rise by 30p to 4.30.

An off-peak Leeds day pass will go up by 20p to 3.40 while countywide FirstWeek tickets are being hiked 50p to 18.50.

FirstWeek passes for Leeds's green zone – roughly bounded by Chapeltown in the north, Halton to the east, Churwell in the south and

Bramley to the west – are going up 2 to 12.

Richard Harris, commercial director for the company in West Yorkshire, said: "Over the past 15 months, First has worked hard to keep its fares down and our fares have not risen in this time.

"During this time we have faced an economic backdrop of rising costs to the business in areas such as pensions, as well as administration costs such as insurance and utility prices.

"We have now reached the point that we have had to look at changing some of our fares to ensure our business can meet these rising costs."

Next month's shake-up will not affect the Simple Fares price system that First recently brought in for single journeys in Leeds.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported on Saturday, meanwhile, how West Yorkshire's publicly-funded passenger transport authority, Metro, had awarded Huddersfield-based Centrebus tenders for 10 services currently run by First.

* Ian Humphreys has been appointed as the new managing director of First in West and North Yorkshire. Mr Humphreys was previously operations director for the firm in the same area. He replaces Dave Alexander, who has been promoted to First's regional managing director in the North.
