Leeds Bradford Airport’s new £11m passenger terminal has been officially opened by the Foreign Secretary.

The Rt. Hon William Hague MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, unveiled the new development which includes a larger departure lounge, food and drink outlets and a new walk-through Tax and Duty Free store.

Construction work on the terminal started last December and the new building has created an extra 65 per cent increase in airside space over two floors at the Yeadon-based site.

The Yorkshire Premier Lounge has also been extended to provide a separate business zone and family friendly leisure lounge.

Boarding gate zones have been extended and a covered walkway has been constructed from the terminal to a number of aircraft stands for all weather cover.

William Hague MP was taken for a tour around the new facility before the official opening ceremony yesterday.

He said: “Regional airports can make a vital contribution to local and regional economies and Leeds Bradford is an excellent example of that, providing over £100m of value to the City Region, a figure set to grow by 10 per cent with the introduction of the new British Airways services.

“Regional airports also have an important role to play in strengthening the national economy by ensuring that the UK remains one of the best connected countries in the world, so that we can compete successfully for economic opportunities in established and emerging markets.”

John Parkin, Leeds Bradford Airport’s chief executive, added: “I am delighted to welcome William Hague to celebrate this special day in the airport’s 80 year history for the opening of LBA’s £11 million terminal development.”

Business leaders and council chiefs recently welcomed the launch of British Airways flights from Leeds-Bradford Airport to Heathrow following a 32 year absence.
