FIRE crews from across West Yorkshire were called to a furious blaze that broke out at a paper recycling plant.

Leeds Paper Recycling on Valley Farm Road at Stourton went up in flames just after 1pm yesterday. (Sunday, March 13)

Twelve pumps were sent to tackle the fire from Rothwell, Leeds, Hunslet, Gipton, Stanks, Bradford, Garforth, Ossett, Moortown and Wakefield. Specialist appliances were also sent from Pontefract, Batley, Morley and Illingworth.

West Yorkshire station manager Chris Kirby told the YEP that he expected firefighters to be at the site for at least 24 hours.

He said: “We are trying to remove some of the paper from inside the warehouse, spreading it around and damping it down.

“It will be a long drawn out process due to the deep-seated fire that’s inside the building.”

A full investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out.
