Leeds: Autumn music season promises fun for kids

An autumn season of family concerts in Leeds includes plenty of fun ways to introduce children to live music including Scottish traditional, classical song and chill-out jazz.

By Charles Heslett

The concerts start in October and take place on Sunday afternoons at The Carriageworks.

The season opens on Sunday, October 3, with Haywood and Grime who discover the joy of Scottish folk music with a multitude of instruments including whistles, fiddle, clarinet, saxophone and piano.

Their programme includes self-composed works, lots of opportunities to join in and a highland fling.

Next up is The Wonderful World of Song on Sunday, November 7.

This is an afternoon of songs for everyone to enjoy by Schubert, Britten, Vaughan-Williams and more, with Rhona McKail (soprano), Maciek O'Shea (baritone), and Annabel Thwaite (piano).

On Sunday, January 23, The Fell Clarinet Quartet will take you on a musical journey around the world.

Learn the rhythms of a tango, clap along to a lively Hungarian dance, discover how to dance a Scottish Reel and then chill-out with some jazz.

Meet the different members of the clarinet family, from the huge bass clarinet to the tiny piccolo clarinet and you may even get the chance to conduct.

The final concert of the series features Pure Brass on Sunday, February 20, presenting an eclectic programme exploring all things brass.

The quintet will introduce the different instruments of the brass family, demonstrate how to make a sound from them and then it's your turn.

Each concert features musicians who specialise in performing to young people and lots of opportunities to participate.

Bring along an instrument or just use your voice, hands and feet.

The concerts are most suitable for children aged three to nine, but everyone is welcome.

Tickets are 6 for adults and 4 for children with other concessions.

If you book for all four concerts you can save 20 per cent on the cost of your tickets.

To book, call the Box Office on 0113 224 3801 or book online at www.leedsconcertseason.com.
