Leeds Arena will be built: "No matter what" – Carter

Council chiefs met with business leaders to discuss the site of the proposed 12,500-capacity Leeds Arena last night.

At the meeting, deputy leader Coun Andrew Carter spoke of Leeds City Council's "courageous" decision to plough ahead with the project despite the credit crunch and said the arena would be built for the people of Leeds 'no matter what'.

Acting chief recreation officer Martin Farrington outlined the proposals to more than 50 business leaders at the Leeds Chamber property forum after Clay Pit Lane, on the northern edge of the city centre, was revealed as the chosen location for the 50m arena.

As reported in the YEP, the news caused shockwaves as there were thought to be just two locations left in the running, Sweet Street in Holbeck and land next to Leeds United's Elland Road football ground.

Coun Carter said: "I think we've taken a brave step forward. We believe it's the right thing to do for the people of this city."

Martin Farrington said it was hoped the arena's location would increase the amount of time people spend in the city centre, with visitors to the 12,500-capacity venue spending time at restaurants and bars before and after the concerts.

He also told the forum he was "confident" the city's roads and multi-storey car parks would be able to cope with increased volumes of traffic.
