Leeds and Yorkshire: Community praised for keeping calm

Six people were arrested but there were no reports of major incidents in Yorkshire last night as the county continues to remain largely trouble-free.

The six were arrested overnight on suspicion of violent disorder in relation to incidents in the Deighton area of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire Police said.

There were “isolated pockets of disorder” in Leeds earlier in the week, but nothing on the scale seen in other parts of the country.

The leader of Leeds City Council has expressed his sympathy to all those affected by the unrest in London and other parts of the country and reassured the public that authorities and communities are working together to prevent any future disturbances in his city.

Keith Wakefield said: “The scenes we have witnessed in parts of London and the rest of the country have been shocking and very distressing. We send our sympathy to everyone who has lost their business or home as a result of this mindless violence.

“We wish to reassure the public that we are working with the police to minimise any potential problems in Leeds.

“Our priority is to work very closely with West Yorkshire Police and our communities to maintain calm and build on the good community relations we already have.”

Assistant Chief Constable John Parkinson, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “While we have had some incidents this week, these have involved a small minority of people and have not been on the scale we have seen elsewhere.

“Our communities, particular over recent evenings in Leeds, have been tremendously supportive of the work of local officers and we would ask people to continue to work with us in keeping our communities safe and thank them for their continued support.”
