The Irish community of Leeds are to celebrate their nationality with a host of festivities to celebrate Irish History month and St Patrick’s Day events.

The highlight will be the Irish Day parade in Leeds on Sunday March 17, which attracts thousands of visitors from across the north, at Millennium Square from 11am.

Lots of other traditional events, at Leeds Irish Centre, York Road, include dance, music and entertainment.

Irish folk rockers Clannad are to perform with support from Brian Kennedy at Leeds Town Hall on March 19.

Renowned fiddle player Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill appear at Victoria Hall, Saltaire on March 29.

There is a lecture from Dr Sean Campbell on the impact of second-generation Irish musicians in popular music in Britain at the Headingley Enterprise & Arts Centre, on Friday and a performance from Donal Cox and The Fifth Province at the Ilkley Playhouse on March 21, as well as traditional music sessions in the Grove Inn, Leeds and workshops on Irish arts and culture at a number of primary schools across the city.

Tom McLaughlin, of Leeds Irish Centre, said there was a variety of events: “There is something happening for all ages, and lots to celebrate, everyone is welcome.

“It starts on Friday with the St Patrick’s Parade launch night with Michael Coyne and Irish dancers.

“On Saturday we have The Fair open day from 1-5pm at the Irish Centre, with a farmers’ market and lots of activities.”

Other events include a 60-year tribute to The Quiet Man film, on Tuesday March 12.

For details see www.irishhistorymonth.com.

The events are supported by the Irish Arts Foundation, Leeds City Council and the Irish Government.
