Members of the UK’s first fresh vegetable orchestra took root in a Leeds allotment.
The professional musicians performed a suitably food-related repertoire on hand-carved edible instruments at Saxton apartments in Richmond Hill last night.
Carrot recorders, a trumpet courgette and yam trombone were just some of the musical creations that took centre stage at a private residents party, thrown by developers Urban Splash in celebration of the completion of the award-winning site.
Tim Cranmore, a professional recorder-maker, founded the London Vegetable Orchestra several years ago after he was challenged to make a recorder out of a carrot.
He succeeded, and the rest is history.
Tim said: “I was asked to make a carrot recorder and we performed in Herefordshire.
“Our music was then picked up by Tyrell’s crisps, who asked us to be involved in their advertising campaign.
“We’ve been on Room 101, daytime television, various radio shows and other programmes.
“Believe it or not, everyone here today is a professional musician and students from the Royal Academy – but I’m not sure they knew exactly what they were letting themselves in for when they joined the London Vegetable Orchestra.”
Yesterday Tim played carrot recorder along with Clare Graham. Simon Tong was on trumpet courgette with bell pepper plunger and carrot mouthpiece, Zeb Tonkin was on yam bass trombone and Chris Fry on butternut squash.
They performed as part of the private celebrations, with food provided by street vendors Leeds-based Fish& and Manjit’s Kitchen.
And on Saturday, members of the public are invited to find out more about Saxton, its six and a half acres of outdoor space, 97 allotments, wildflower meadows, orchard and on-site gym.
The open day will take place from 11am until 6pm, and is a drop-in event open to all.
Visitors will get the chance to view show flats, find out about affordable shared ownership schemes and rentals.
An independent financial advisor will also be available to help potential buyers find out more about their options, including a five per cent deposit incentive scheme. Saxton apartments cost from ÂŁ50,000.
