The gruelling 190km Grand Depart stage one route from Leeds to Harrogate is not for amateurs.

Tour de France reporter Jonathan Brown ha got back in the saddle to take on the stage in a single day and raise money for charity. His Le Tour Trial challenge is in aid of the charities behind Wheatfields and St Gemma’s hospices in Leeds. Visit www.justgiving.com/teams/letourtrial to donate.

WEEK FOUR: Having fallen off the wagon a little last week, I’m back on track.

After last week’s scary but enjoyable first foray on to the roads, I summed up the courage to test myself a bit further and set my sights on Harewood on Sunday which is about 8miles from where I live in north Leeds.

Given I’ve to take on more like 120miles, I figured this was a doable start considering my experience on the turbo trainer and I set off for the stately home on Sunday.

Rather than go straight there and back I decided to make it a bit of a loop and made my way through Alwoodley, Eccup and Adel – after a wrong turn – before rolling through Weardley and tackling the climb from behind the Harewood estate.

I fared pretty well and, though I was wheezing my way up the climb, it was great to finally get out on to some country roads.

I managed about 20miles in all and I felt I had a bit more in me, which is a good sign.

Given my new-found motivation, I’ve managed to get back on the static bike as well.

It’s pretty boring but I’ve found combining it with watching films or questionable TV helps me through – my show of choice this week was a re-run of Channel 4’s First Dates.
