Ken Stratford, chairman of the festival committee, said: "It was brilliant. It was the largest attendance we have ever had.

"We lost count at 15,000.

"I don't think there's another completely volunteer run festival of its kind in the north of England."

The warm weather, extra volunteers and more stalls all helped boost visitor numbers and publicity for the event according to Ken.

The community party had a 'Kirkstall Zoo' theme which saw kids dressed up for a 700-yard long procession which snaked through neighbourhood streets to the Abbey grounds.

There were also seven different performance areas hosting various bands including a youth stage for teen musicians.

Entertainment included a falconry display, stunt bike riders, cheerleaders the Aviator Allstars and martial arts antics from the Ninja Horses.

Mr Stratford added: "We are a registered charity and it's 100 per cent run by volunteers. We have to raise around 30,000 every year just to put it on. This was the best year we have ever organised.

"We have had more volunteers working on it and we have younger people working on it too which was great. I am convinced there will be a 60th festival."

Kirkstall Festival organisers held a photography competition to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The best 100 images will be made into a book to be exhibited on July 29 at East Street Arts, St Mary's Lane, Leeds.
