Kippax Leisure Centre's swimming pool is likely to remain closed until the start of next year, council bosses said today.

The pool was shut in September after debris began falling from a ceiling at the east Leeds centre.

And as recently as the middle of this week, the city council said a date had yet to be set for its reopening.

Now, though, the council has announced that it hopes the popular community facility will be back in business in January.

The local authority's executive member for leisure, Coun John Procter, said: "We have drained the pool in readiness of a thorough investigation to identify what repair work is needed, and we are shortly to erect scaffolding over the pool to undertake checks.

"Subject to the outcome of the investigation we plan to install a new ceiling and anticipate the pool reopening in January."

The Station Road site's non-swimming facilities remain open as usual.

Labour ward councillors have said the pool closure highlights the need for more investment in the centre.

City-wide sports provision plans published in August by the Tory and Lib Dem-run council said a single site replacement for Kippax and Garforth leisure centres might not see the light of day until 2017.
