A man has been given a suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay £2,000 compensation to a Good Samaritan who ended up with a broken arm when he tried to intervene in a dispute.
Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday (Oct 22) the victim Thomas McNeilly was at home watching a football match on television with his three sons and others on February 18 when his attention was drawn to a noise outside.
He looked out and saw Luke Croft running over to a female and grab her by the throat, said John Bull prosecuting.
The girl was shouting and screaming and he went out to help her but when he approached the couple he was told to mind his own business.
Croft then took a swing at him and the next thing Mr McNeilly recalled was being on the ground.
Croft told police later the blow did not land but Mr McNeilly fell awkwardly moving away and broke his right forearm as he landed. He had to have it manipulated under anaesthetic and was in plaster and off work for six weeks.
Tony Kelbrick, for Croft, said he was still in the relationship with his girlfriend and felt genuine remorse about what had happened.
Croft, 21, of Brettegate, Hemsworth, Pontefract, was given 51 weeks in jail suspended for 12 months, 200 hours unpaid work and compensation after he admitted causing grievous bodily harm.
