Jihad sympathisers 'had no part in 7/7 plot'

Three Leeds men accused of helping the July 7 bombers plan their attacks had "radical" views but played no part in the plot, a jury has heard.

Waheed Ali, Mohammed Shakil and Sadeer Saleem, from Beeston, are alleged to have carried out a "hostile reconnaissance mission" in London where they pinpointed potential targets months before the atrocity.

But barristers for the trio have told a court that although they were friends with some of the bombers and had "sympathies for jihad" overseas, they had no involvement in the attack on the capital's transport network.

Ali, 25, Shakil, 32, and Saleem, 28, deny one charge of conspiring with the four bombers Mohammed Siddique Khan, Shezhad Tanweer, Jermaine Lindsay and Hasib Hussain, and others unknown, to cause explosions between November 17, 2004, and July 8, 2005.

The four suicide bombers killed 52 people and injured hundreds more when they set off a series of explosions on a bus and on Underground trains in 2005.

Ali and Shakil also deny a second charge of conspiracy to attend a place used for terrorist training.

They are accused of preparing to fly to Pakistan to attend a training camp when they were arrested in March 2007.

The defendants are accused of spending two days in London on December 16 and 17, 2004, where they scouted potential targets and visited the Natural History Museum, the London Eye and the London Aquarium.

Their barristers have given opening speeches to the jury at Kingston Crown Court where they insisted the London trip had been an innocent outing.
