Investigation launched after claims of daylight sex attack on schoolgirl in Leeds park

Lewisham Park, Morley.

Lewisham Park, Morley.

Police are investigating claims an 11-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in daylight in a Leeds park.

The youngster made a complaint following an alleged incident in Lewisham Park, in Morley, on Saturday morning.

Officers shut off part of the park, pictured, which is popular with families and dog walkers, and carried out house-to-house enquiries on neighbouring Middleton Road, Clough Street and Lewisham Grove at the weekend.

They initially made three arrests, but later released them without charge.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating an allegation of indecent assault on an 11-year-old girl in Lewisham Park, Morley, which was reported at about 11.25am on Saturday.

“Three men were initially arrested in connection with the investigation but were later released without charge.

“Officers are continuing to work with the girl and her parents to establish the full circumstances.”

One local resident, who did not want to be named, said: “The park was really busy at the time. Police came round asking questions, but wouldn’t tell us what was going on.”
