Illegal scooter riders face crackdown in West Yorks

SCOOTER boys are being urged to get on their bikes legally.

Illegal scooter riders will be the target of a new crackdown by West Yorkshire Police before Christmas.

Last year, about 100 riders of powered two-wheelers were killed or seriously injured in West Yorkshire on machines of under 125cc. A third of those were riding 50cc machines.

Young riders on the road illegally, without insurance, tax or licence, could face a fine, points or even having their machines confiscated and crushed.

Coun Andrew Carter, Leeds City Council's transport and travel head, said: "Scooters are often the first taste of real independence for some youngsters. However, riders must ensure they get proper training and have all the required paperwork before they go on the roads. It's not like riding a pushbike."

Call Dave Glanville, council road safety officer on 0113 247 5804 or email david.glanville@leeds.gov.uk for advice.
