Hundreds sign up for Leeds half marathon

Quick-off-the-mark runners are already making a dash to sign up for the Leeds Half Marathon – before the event has even been officially launched.

More than 500 people have already registered on the internet to take part in the race through Leeds city centre by using the Runner's World website.

The Leeds City Council-run event attracted over 5,000 runners last year after a successful YEP-backed campaign to save it from the axe.

Bob Jackson, chairman of Valley Striders running club based in Alwoodley, who were also behind the campaign, said: "I would expect that places could be full anything up to two months ahead of the actual event.

"It's a good sign that so many people have their minds on taking part already and it shows how important the event is for Leeds.

"A lot of the people who couldn't take part in the London Marathon will want to get involved in this race and it's such a great event for Leeds."

The event attracted 5,100 runners in September and took in a 13.1 mile course through the city centre. There was also a 1.5 mile family fun run which will again be included this year.

Last year the winner of the half marathon for men and women each received 500 in prize money. The first man and woman from the Leeds local authority area, or from a Leeds club, received 200.

Winners last year were Ian Fisher, of Otley AC, in 1hr 9min 14sec and Sue Harrison, of Leamington, in 1hr 19min 30sec.

Information on how to register early can be found at www.runnersworld.co.uk.

The event, which takes place in May, will officially be launched at the end of this month, when runners can find more information at www.leeds.gov.uk. Forms will also be available at local leisure centres.
