The weather outside may have been frightful but inside the mood could have been warmer.

The Yorkshire Evening Post Christmas Carol Concert saw hundreds flock into Leeds Minster to escape the howling wind for a night of celebration and singing.

The popular event drew an impressive 500 people - significantly higher than 2012 - and was conducted by The Rev Canon Tony Bundock.

The church choir and Yorkshire Evening Post Brass Band provided the accompaniment to get the public into the festive spirit with traditional carols and hymns.

Their rendition of Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, was a notable highlight.

And of course the highlight came with the annual gift-giving ceremony, with children placing toys under the giant tree to be presented to vulnerable youngsters across the city.

A spokesman for the event said he was overwhelmed by people’s kindness and generosity.

“There are so many that we will share these between the children’s unit at the Leeds General Infirmary and the Mission Christmas Toy Appeal.”

There was also a raft of donations made, totalling just over £1,200, which will be split and contributed to the YEP half and half appeal and the Leeds Minster.

The Yorkshire Evening Post Half and Half Appeal supports two of the city’s hospices, St Gemma’s and Sue-Ryder Wheatfields.

YEP editorial director Jeremy Clifford said: “The whole evening was a fantastic advertisement for the city.

“The generosity of the people who turned up with gifts was truly humbling. The presents they provided will go some way to helping make Christmas special for some of Leeds’s young people.

“It was a pleasure to see so many people turn up on such a cold and inclement evening.”

The YEP Christmas Carol Concert is fast becoming a staple of the city’s Christmas calendar, having been run successfully now for several years.
