FIREFIGHTERS are currently tackling a blaze in west Leeds that has sent plumes of smoke across Leeds Bradford Airport.
The grass fire at a nearby farm broke out earlier this afternoon (July 25), and has spread to a car and surrounding fields.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The fire has affected the airport due to the amount of smoke.
“The police are involved in traffic control, as traffic has started building up.
“There smoke is across the runway and the fire is spreading to a couple of other fields.”
Fire crews from across Leeds have been called in to tackle the blaze, but Tony Hallwood, aviation development and marketing director at Leeds Bradford Airport, said it had not affected flights.
“[The fire] is nothing to do with Leeds Bradford Airport and I understand it was in a farmer’s field.
“I believe the local fire brigade have been called and I am sure it will be extinguished shortly.
“Our planes are still taking off and landing and my team assure me that everything is well.”
