Horsforth todders try their hand at archaeology

Horsforth's Trinity and All Saints College has been working on a project to bring archaeology to young children. Click here for more details.

West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service staff have been teaching a module on archaeology in the classroom to initial teacher training students at TASC for several years.

Some of these students were keen on using archaeology with Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children but could find no appropriate material. Generating this material and testing it in the classroom provided the basis for the Archaeology and Early Years web presentation.

Now the Service is sharing its experiences with a wider audience. Archaeology and Early Years contains a host of activities which teachers can carry out in the classroom. These include activities to help prepare the topic, sand tray excavations, sorting exercises, and role play.

Graham Hebblethwaite, chief officer of West Yorkshire Joint Services, which oversees the work of the Archaeology Advisory Service said, "It's good to share initiatives of this kind with other education providers. This joint project with Trinity and All Saints has produced a wide range of valuable resources for teachers to use in school."

Councillor Geoff Driver of the West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee, said: "Simulation exercises like those generated by the Archaeology and Early Years project have a vital role to play in stimulating children's interest in finding out about the past."
