Horsforth schools are top of the environmental class

THREE Horsforth schools have been named top of the class in the environmental stakes after becoming the first in Yorkshire to earn a top European eco standard.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School, West End Primary School and Newlaithes Junior School all scooped the award along with Otley All Saints, Tranmere Park in Guiseley, Rawdon Littlemoor and Adel St John the Baptist.

It is part of a partnership between Groundwork Leeds, Leeds City Council and gas company United Utilities known as Green Check. Green Check harnesses pupil power to get schools to reduce their environmental impact and draw up effective school action plans.

Children have been actively involved in tree and bulb planting, acting as light and water monitors to cut down on waste, harvesting left over drinking water for watering plants, recycling paper and composting fruit.

Coun Steve Smith, executive board member for environmental services, said: "Schools can play such an important part in championing environmental issues for future generations and this project is a great way for children to learn first-hand how they can take simple steps to protect the environment and learn new skills to live more sustainably.

"I hope the children enjoyed the project and will continue their good practice at home too."

The Lord Mayor of Leeds presented the schools with their certificates at a celebration event where children from each school helped to build a habitat for insects and other creatures to hibernate in.
