The school previously came 8th in the world and this year Andrew was awarded an individual silver medal for coming ninth in his age group.

The year five pupil was presented with a medal by David Phillips, the UK national director of World Maths Day Challenge, at the school.

Acting head teacher, Maralyn Pollard, told Horsforth Today: "We are very proud of the achievement of all our children and particularly delighted with

Andrew's individual success. I am glad that they think maths is such an exciting subject."

Andrew said: "I really enjoyed doing all the different calculations we practise every day at school."

Andrew, who wants to be a professional footballer, added: "People that struggle with maths shouldn't give up they should keep on trying.

"I am a bit nervous about my SATs next year but hopefully I will do well in maths."
