Horsforth children get lowdown on prickly subject

But Kerby, the giant hedgehog, was in Horsforth to launch a book to keep children safe when crossing the street.

Risky Roads charts Kerby's journey and aims to teach vital road safety skills.

It tackles topics such as holding hands, the Green Cross Code, safe places to cross and wearing bright clothes to be easily spotted.

Kerby was at the Horsforth West End Primary School to read the book to reception pupils for the first time.

Thanks to sponsorship by law firm Irwin Mitchell, the city council is providing every school in Leeds with a free copy.

Council statistics show 310 children were injured on roads in Leeds last year.

Rebecca Prosser, council road safety manager, said: "It is hoped the new book will reinforce safety messages taught by parents.

"Risky Roads is one of many initiatives we deliver to local primary schools to provide young people with the road safety skills."
