Homes shortage is causing stress, MP tells Commons
A LEEDS MP has told the Commons how his advice surgeries were being "overwhelmed" by people suffering "housing stress."
John Battle (Lab, Leeds West) said families were having to endure overcrowding because of a shortage of homes to rent.
He said expensive, single-person flats being built in Leeds were unaffordable or unsuitable for his constituents.
"My regular advice surgeries are overwhelmed by people suffering what could be described as housing stress.
"Such people include: young couples desperate to get a home of their own who are sleeping on sofas with families; youngsters with children who are sleeping in the front room with their grandparents, and people who are overcrowded in what are euphemistically called 'box rooms'."
The number of new homes built in the city dropped by 17 per cent to 2,685 in 2006/07, it was revealed this week.
