But for all the glitz and glamour of the latest silver screen adaptation, the fabled bowman's Yorkshire roots are still there for all to see.

Not only have movie moguls cast Leeds lad Jack Downham as young Robin but leading man and Gladiator star Russell Crowe is a confirmed Leeds Rhinos fan.

These new links between Robin and the White Rose county are the latest footnote in the long debate over whether England's most famous gentleman thief was actually a dyed-in-the-wool Yorkshireman.

And for Farfield Primary School pupil Jack, seven, the chance to be part of the latest incarnation of the Robin Hood legend was a massive break.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "I was very happy when my mum told me I had got the role. I like Robin Hood and I know quite a lot about the story.

"I play little Robin Hood as a child and I'm going to be in a flashback where Robin's dad is dying. I've been to the set and I met Russell Crowe and (director] Ridley Scott. They were really nice and made me feel at home."

Many experts agree that Robin's grave is close to Kirklees Priory where he is believed to have died and some scholars have argued that the fabled Prince of Thieves was a simple Wakefield yeoman.

Barbara Green, president of the Yorkshire Robin Hood Society was less than enthusiastic about another Hollywood retelling.

She said: "None of the adaptations bother to follow the history and what we know from documentary evidence."

But she added: "I suppose it's nice that there is a bit of a Yorkshire link in the new film though."

* Robin Hood is released nationwide on May 14.
